Epsilon BIOS Custom Flash Replacement For PSP PDF Print E-mail

A talented team have been hard at work on a custom flash Replacement for the PSP, which will not only allow you to use homebrew files and run unsigned code on the PSP but will also allow you to enjoy the quality features built into all Sony PSP firmware revisions, right up there to the current v2.71 firmware! The team behind the Epsilon BIOS have completed cracked the encryption methods and developed the OS hacks to run unsigned code and even in kernel mode. The team have been unable to release this previously due to the lack of a modchip for the PSP, but with the much talked about Undiluted Platinum PSP mod just around the corner, a dream can now become a viable reality! The Epsilon BIOS will be released soon.

Epsilon BIOS Team Statement:

Epsilon BIOS is a custom flash "replacement" for the Sony PSP which unleashes the full potential of your handheld, allowing you to both use homebrew software and run UMD ISO games from your Memory stick on the latest firmware releases while also enjoying the impressive features built into the operating system such as RSS feeds, WMA support etc. Currently the 2.71 firmware release is supported - thats right, this means we have cracked the new encryption methods and developed the operating system hacks necessary to allow unsigned code to run, even in kernel mode.

We have been developing Epsilon BIOS for quite some time, but due to the fact that it requires a dual-flash system (one flash is used to bootstrap our code, the other stores the normal PSP firmware) we have been unable to release it - until now, with the appearance of the Undiluted Platinum modchip. Previously we had been using our own custom hardware for development, however about a week ago we received Undiuluted Platinum prototypes and have since modified our code to work with their hardware - its working great, despite a few bugs which we need to iron out before the release. For those who are wondering, yes, you will need an Undiluted Platinum installed in your PSP to take advantage of this.

As mentioned above, using Epsilon BIOS its possible to launch homebrew software from the memory stick, kernel mode access is also available for software which requires this. Both 1.0 and 1.5 style EBOOTs are supported. UMD ISO loading is almost transparent, simply copy your ISO files into a directory on your memory stick and they will appear under "Game -> Memory Stick" in the operating system menu alongside your homebrew applications. Simply launch them from here, no need to use a seperate ISO loader application. Furthermore, since the games are actually running on 2.x firmware you dont need to worry about strange loading methods or patching the ISO files - they will simply work, in their original state. We have also developed our own compressed ISO format and will be distributing a packing tool.

We will be releasing a video over the next few days showing Epsilon BIOS in action - keep an eye out for this! As for the actual release, this depends on how soon we can resolve the remaining issues but we hope to have it out within 1-2 weeks.

The modchip we told you about over the weekend is for real! Here are all the details of it along with another picture: 
"The U.P. (Undiluted Platinum) is a flash replacement system for the PSP™ which allows the use of previous flash updates or custom firmware builds, opening up the possibility to run unsigned homebrew code on even the latest PSP systems. The U.P. contains 32MB NAND flash which is programmable from the PC via a high speed USB connection, using our user friendly software. You may boot the PSP from either its onboard flash or the flash contained on the U.P; the flash which is used is determined by a button press as the PSP is powered on (U.P. flash is used by default, hold L1 to use the PSP onboard flash). Since U.P. provides a secondary flash which the PSP can boot from, it can even be used to restore a PSP which has been "bricked". Every effort has been made to make our flash updater software, which will be freely available for download, both as easy to use and reliable as possible. The software also contains diagnostics which can be used by installers to determine if an installation has been successful or not.
 
The U.P. has been designed to minimize installation difficulty and effort. A FPC (flexible printed circuit) cable is included which routes the essential signals from the PSP motherboard to the U.P. main board and U.P. USB connector. Copper enamel wire is included, which will provide the connection between the FPC cable and the motherboard signal traces. The FPC cable also helps by reducing the mechanical stress placed on the solder points, making a U.P. modified PSP shock resistant which is important for handheld systems. Installation aids are included, and installation diagrams for all PSP hardware revisions will be available for download, together with flasher software application, from our reseller's websites. The FPC cable end to which the USB connector board attaches is routed into the battery compartment and sits above the battery. The battery cover can be replaced after flash updating and the cable remains safely in the compartment until the next update is required, whereupon the USB connector can be clipped in place within a few seconds. This means that the U.P. is completely contained within the PSP under normal usage and avoids any unsightly external modifications to your PSP. PSP is after all portable, let’s keep it that way!

In order to maximise the benefits that U.P. can provide its users, we have decided to take an open source approach with U.P and will be releasing source code for any software we release as well as full documentation for the U.P. hardware interface - including information on how to control U.P. from within PSP programs. This will allow anybody to create software which can take advantage of what U.P. has to offer. We have also sent a few prototype units away to some of the scene's best software hackers in order to give them a headstart at working on custom flash replacements - cant wait to see what people will come up with!

It will be priced at around 75 Euros, or $90. A bit high, if you ask me. But will definetly be completely worth it. I guess this is enough to silence the skeptics. And making the PSP 'brick-proof'? Wow, that's something which will excite everyone. This would obviously lead to more hacks since the hackers can experiment without fearing bricking their PSP."

First PSP Modchip Announced - Undiluted Platinum! PDF Print E-mail

So it seems the race with Sony - finding new exploits as the Playstation Portable's firmware gets updated - may soon be over for good, and sony arent the winners this time! The first PSP modchip, Undiluted Platinum, will soon arrive, acting as a flash replacement. According to the manufacturer, it will now be possible to use older or even custom firmwares!

The chip has been designed to fit entirely inside the Playstation Portable. Unsigned homebrew code will run even on the latest PSP systems!

We don't have much more details to offer yet apart from the picture, but more information will arrive next week - so stay tuned for more updates - we're as excited as you are!

This is still a rumour and should be treated as such in the time being.

Monkey64 v2.0 released PDF Print E-mail

Here it is, the latest version of PSMonkey's Monkey64 great Nintendo64 emulator for the PSP is out!! Monkey64 is one of 2 N64 emulator available for the PSP, along with the N64 emulator port Daedalus. Here's what PSMonkey said:



"Monkey64 is an n64 emulator started from scratch that takes the PSP limitations into consideration. The ultimate goal is solid n64 emulation at 30-60fps on the psp. This will not come instantly but maybe 6 months from now it will be a reality."

Here's the been added for v2.0:
  • Way too much to list, Commercial Roms work.
  • Fast 3D/SW 2.0, Fast 3D Ext, F3DEX1.0 & F3DEX2.0 Microcodes supported
  • Many gfx & Hle issues still exist. Missing a surface clipper & n64 combiner support.
  • 4Kb Eeprom supported - (if you wish to use your eeproms from pc emu's, rename them the same as the rom and change the extension to .epr)

So, what does all this mean? Faster emulation, improved handling of Roms, improved stability, and an increase in the amount of Roms supported by Monkey64. This emulator has been coded from the ground up, and PSMonkey deserves all the support he can get - well done PSmonkey!

Daedalus N64 Emulator Update PDF Print E-mail

Well, the wheel was set rolling on 1st May with the first release of Daedalus. And the juggernaut has been going on and getting stronger with every release. Now we have the 4th release of the N64 Emulator, and it's better than ever.

Here's a changelog:

[!] Disable PSP FPU exceptions, enabling many more roms to run.
[!] Fixed ambient lighting bug.
[!] Fixed scissoring.
[~] Only create temp rom file if compressed (not swapped).
[~] Fixed decaling offset.
[~] Lots of combiner additions/fixes.


Although the changelog is quite small, StrmnNrmn believes that it will help compatibility. He also promised that he'll optimise the code so that it's faster. That'll be in the next update, though. The single archive contains the 1.0 and 1.5 versions, plus the source code.

GTA Cheat Device v1.0d - Drive on Walls PDF Print E-mail

This release (The one you've all been waiting for) adds the ability to drive on walls with any car! It's pretty simple to use too. To use the cheat device, simply download a game save (US/UK version), run GTA, and load the Cheat Device as a game save.

To use the drive on walls cheat: You need to use hover cars to get on a roof of a building (One that has a roof, as some don't in GTA:LCS), then drive off the edge at about 20 mph. As long as the "driving on walls" cheat is activated, you will be able to drive on the wall! Edison Carter also stressed that this does not work on 2.7; so please don't request for it to ported to 2.7.

PSPWarp V0.3 Released PDF Print E-mail

Got pictures of people you don't like on your PSP? Now you can warp their photo on the move! Soundinsekt has released his first homebrew application for the PSP, PSPWarp.

PSPWarp is a program for interactive image warping based on "IWarp", a plugin for The Gimp (An image manipulation program) by Norbert Schmitz. Currently, It only supports the PNG image format, but Soundinsekt plans to add JPG support for future releases. This is quite fun if you want to mess around with photos, and the quality it really good.

Here's a list of PSPWarp's manipulation features:
  • Grow (Stretches certain parts of the image)
  • Shrink
  • Move
  • Swirl (Both clockwise and counter clockwise)
  • Remove (Returns part of the image to its previous state)

This application has been tested on firmware 1.5, and you will require at least one photo in the PSP/PHOTO directory in order to use it.

N64 Emulator Released - Daedalus! PDF Print E-mail

Update!
A new version of this emulator has been released enabling it to be run in User Mode so it is compatible with 2.0 Firmware, as well as 1.0 and 1.50 Firmware. The R2 update also fixes some of the minor issues that were being reported, such as hardcoded firectories and missing files.

Yep we have a N64 Emulator! StrmnNrmn has released the first public build of his N64 Emulator, Daedalus. And it's working pretty good. Although it's a port, it still shows that given the right amount of perseverance, anything can be achieved.

Here's what's not working for now :
  • There is no savegame support.
  • There is no audio support.
  • Not all the N64 controls can be used.
  • Large ROMs (i.e. over 8MB) cannot be loaded.
  • Many roms won't boot.
  • Many roms have serious graphical glitches.
  • Many roms have random lockups and crashes.
  • Most roms run at a low framerate.
It will be solved in further updates.

It isn't running at full speed, but heck, it's better than nothing - there are atleast  few running games. Plus, the application is open source. So anybody can check it out and improve it. Make sure to check out the readme. It's filled with a lot of important info.

Netlib v1.2 Released! Make Phone Calls From Your PSP! PDF Print E-mail

youresam has just updated netlib. It's a library of functions which developers can use so that they dont have to re-type the code. They can simply call the functions from this library and it will do its work. Also in the newest version, youresam has added a really wacky function. You can make phone-calls! Yep, you read that right. But you can't actually talk to the opposite guy. But hey, it might just happen in the future.

Originally, PsPmad's idea, youresam implemented it into netlib. Here's how it works:
  • Edit the config.txt file and fill in your phone number, and the number which you want to call.
  • Now simply call up the number. It's completely anonymous! Though, don't come back crying if your girlfriend's dad comes after you like a lunatic for making prank calls.

There are two limitations though. You can only use "your number" 3 times. Yep, no more. It will be solved in one of the upcoming versions. The second limitation is that it can only be used in the US of A. Why don't you guys try it out and report your findings below. Be advised though, this library is originally meant for developers. The only use for the common PSP user is for some fun. Just wait until some developer integrates this into his homebrew.

PSPTris v0.5 Released PDF Print E-mail

Sandberg has released a new homebrew game, PSPTris v0.5. PSPTris is a tetris clone for the PSP. Although this is the stand alone version, Sandberg plans to make PSPTris run as a plugin for Raf's PSPRadio homebrew application.

This version is the initial release, and includes the basic game. It features:
  • Game type selection - You can currently choose between Classic and Brick (Availible in the next version)
  • Level selection - Select your difficulty level from 1-9
  • High score table - Show off your PSPTris high scores to your friends!
This homebrew game plays really well, and will challenge the very best tetris players whilst on the hardest difficulty setting (level 9). When implemented, this game will be a great addition to PSPRadio; and with PSPRadio now featuring a fully-functional browser, and with the addition of PSPTris as a plugin to come, PSPRadio is changing from an online radio streaming application to an all-purpose shell!

PSPTris has been tested to work on both 1.5 and 2.0+ using the latest eLoader.

Lua PSP Programming Tutorials PDF Print E-mail

It's great that there's a few guys who've always taken the time to write programming tutorials for newbies to the PSP, and programming in general.  And trust me, a lot of current homebrew developers are so well known, just because of these tutorials.  For those who don't know anything about programming, Lua is one of the easiest languages to start with. It's got pretty powerful functions, so if you work hard, you can make games which are great. A great example would be the game PSP Millionaire itself. It's pretty addictive and great fun to play.

Anyways, here's the full list of tutorials which are written by PSPMillionaire, including the old ones. If you're interested in developing homebrew games, look no further. All you need is some programming knowledge, and lots of cool ideas.
